practicality

I have become shabby. For reasons both financial and cultural, I don't do much shopping. My shirts are either polos, all getting older and frayed at the edges, or tshirts with the word FESTIVAL on them. My pants are a pair of shorts (black) and a pair of jeans (second hand). I've got boots, but I wear converse.

I'm fat, and clothes fit me oddly. The state of my appearance needs to become someone's hobby, if only for the good of my trivia nights.

    1. Guys my size do not give clothes to goodwill. We wear them out completely.

    2. what prompted that response, is that I live in Portland, Ore. it is the home of the mother-ship GW. It's where GW began. So it gets more good shit than any other GW. I do see very large to super large men's clothes there sometimes, and certainly not all in worn out shape. Who knows - sometimes a guy goes down a size of two, there are lots of reasons why clothes get donated.
I'm really sick right now, fuuuuuucked up sinus shit, but I'm gonna look for you when I feel better. You can email me @: londondaze@gmail.com if you want to give me an appox of your size. I don't promise anything....however, I must admit that I am the queeeen of GW shopping - you would not believe some of the things I've found there!
Of course if I get lucky you will owe me a case of beer :))

  2. Thrift shopping is great . However I think you have to be in the mood to go clothes shopping . Sometimes it's a bit of an ordeal!

    1. Thrift shopping is great if I want typewriters. It doesn't lead to me owning new and decent looking shirts, though.

  3. I am going to be the devil's advocate and say we shouldn't have to worry what we look like. We should be judged on how we treat others.

I will tell you a little story. When my mom was living she made sure my dad trimmed his beard, cut his hear and wear proper clothing when he went out. When she was on her literal death bed she told me to make sure I got rid of the sweat pants he chose to wear to the hospital. She died 5 years ago next week. He hasn't cut his hair or beard and still owns the same sweat pants. He wears sweat pants wherever he goes! But he is the kindest and most generous person I have ever known. And that is all that matters.

Forgive me if I have told you this already. I read a lot of blogs and know I have told this story before.

    1. That's cool, but I literally stand up with a microphone in my hand and perform in front of a crowd 4 to 5 days per week, and looking like a homeless guy isn't the best plan for that kind of job. Kind and gentle is great, but I'm not an aging widower and that's not all that matters.

    2. I totally agree, Hank. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look presentable or feeling good about yourself for doing so.

    3. It's true. Although I also can appreciate what Birdie is saying - in many cases, we do judge too harshly by appearance. But there are times when a man wants to look a little snazzier.

  4. I think I love you. I would do a shopping spree with your ma or Lily. Lily is a sharp dresser. I am all about casual wear. I buy 1 or 2 pairs of jeans a year from Macy's on sale and 7 tops from there on sale as well. I don't know if there are large size men's stores in your area. But I aoways look for sales. Then I wear the close out and buy more tops as needed. I wish I could shop online but it doesn't work well for me with clothes. Good luck. I left a message on your last entry and I don't think it took.

  5. When my son became unusually shaped (very long and thin with superlong limbs) at the precise time in his life that he needed to upgrade his personal style (prep school, university, career) I referred him to the Art of Manliness website. It also covers everything about growing and maintaining a beard, tying a tie properly and all that other stuff that men need to know. He went from sagging jeans to GQ quite quickly and found that some of those classic looks for men are classic for a reason: they look good!

I could really see you rocking flat-front khakis, linen or lightweight wool and a guayabera the way Hemingway did. All those Cuban men always look put together! The guayabera is a great look for the tropical climate and it covers the waist which is an upgrade. A vest or a light cardigan over a well-fitting tucked-in dress shirt is great for the same reason. Add a well-chosen hat for extra height.

You can skip the preachy part at the beginning. I am a big gal and I think you just gotta be you and do you right.

BTW I think you are very handsome and striking with your red hair, ink and wonderful smile. You could become a style icon for big guys!

  6. I guess I think that those classic looks would also be a cool, ironic contrast with your ink and piercings. Yeah, I could make your style profile my hobby. If you send me your sizes I can keep an eye out for a few pieces too. Big urban thrifting has a lot more variety in size and style.
