big man

Fat at 25 is a world away from fat at 40. Fat at 25 is largely an aesthetic issue. If you like being big, if you are attracted to big people and confident that people will be attracted to you, go for it. It can be hard to find clothes that fit and you likely won't win any foot races, but you can certainly be a big kid and keep up physically.

By 40, your body's starting to chug anyway. That time your knee got kicked out in a mosh pit isn't just receding comfortably into the past, if you know what I mean. Your back aches because your mattress sucks. You get a weird elbow pain and hope it's not impending elbow cancer. So maybe having a bunch of extra weight on you starts to be more of an issue. You're panting goes up stairs. You don't want to take a trip across country because plane seats are a pain in the ass. You worry about your blood pressure, your heart, all the inside bits.

So you start to weigh calories in verses calories out. You cut back on your beer some. And then you remember that if you could do all that shit regularly, you wouldn't be a big fat guy.

So, trying to lose weight. Not sure if I want to talk about it or not. Definitely don't want advice - thanks, though, heard it. Just putting that out there.

  1. Yeah, I'm kind of scared of ageing. And all that comes with it. Being lighter feels exceptionally good to me, yet I don't keep up the things that let me be lighter. I wish it came more naturally.

    1. I don't think aging scares me, but I can feel the effects. You know?

  2. I hear you Hank . I put on a lot of weight when I had my children and carried it for years. I really noticed my knees and back really carried the strain . I hear you too about not wanting to hear advice . I lost all the weight I put on when my mother had breast cancer and I was too stressed to eat much . Happily my mother is doing well at 80 after having a mastectomy 6 years ago . Not a great way to lose weight .

    1. Yeah, advice usually just grates on me. I'm not binge eating ice cream, but I am definitely a compulsive eater. It's a struggle. I don't really have an "I'm full" switch.

  5. It is hard, but God I love that you can talk about it. Takes a brave man, an honest man.

  6. I got to a weight loss group (TOPS - Taking Off Pounds Sensibly). It isn't to lose weight, it is to prevent me from getting any bigger. All the women in my family are big and it is a daily fight for me. I love food. I love to eat. FYI - I just finished a bowl of berries and whipped cream. I could eat the entire contents of whipped cream right out of the container.

    1. Me, too. If it is here, I will eat it. I have a hard time with budgeting because of that. If I don't want to eat all my snacks in one night, I can't buy enough for tomorrow night. Same for meal fixings, mostly.
